Encyclopedia of Japanese technical terms in Schlatt's Shôtôkan karate style.
After three previous editions, which were essentially only reprints of the first edition, the reference work has now been completely revised and expanded. Further terms were incorporated, new image material was added and the entire work was produced in color for the first time. In this way, the high standard has been raised quite a bit. This Shôtôkan encyclopedia (shôtôkan no hyakka jiten ) is designed as a reference book for the Japanese terminology used in the art of karate-dô and is not a book for learning the technique.
The focus of this work is on the expressions used in the Shôtôkan style. The complete and clear presentation of all karate techniques, all competition expressions and karate philosophies in a hitherto unique form with Japanese characters (kanji), pronunciation and translation. The content consists of the number system, the attack and movement directions, the basic kata and the higher kata as well as commands, dôjô rules, body parts and a richly illustrated technique part. Furthermore, the philosophical background of Shôtôkan is also discussed, through the explanation of selected terms, the development of the word karate-dô, the twenty paragraphs of karate by Funakoshi Gichin and much more. The most important terms and a few comments from famous Zen masters form the conclusion.
