Tai Chi sabres made of wood

In Tai Chi Chuan, in addition to weapons such as the double-edged sword Jian and the long staff Gun, the sabre Dao is also traditionally used. Unlike the slender Jian, which was considered a weapon of officers and scholars, the robust Dao was originally a weapon of war for ordinary soldiers.

The sabres used in Tai Chi are usually so-called oxtail sabres, or Niu Wei Dao in Chinese, with the characteristic widened blade. In external martial arts such as some Kung Fu styles, this Dao is still considered an easy weapon for beginners to learn, as it can both deal and parry powerful blows. The blunt back of the blade can be held close to the body or supported by the free hand for blocking. In the internal martial art of Tai Chi Chuan, the Dao is a helpful tool for executing harmonious, flowing movements and cultivating the perception and control of energy.
