The John Lee Shirasaya Katana black is part of a long Japanese tradition. Shirasaya is a special sword mount without handle winding, guard and other decorative elements, which served two main purposes in its unadorned design. In times of peace, the valuable blade was kept well protected embedded in the unvarnished magnolia wood, as this wood had the characteristic of conducting moisture to the outside and thus protecting the blade from rust. An inscription, Sayagaki, often provided information about the blacksmith and the origin of the blade. Towards the end of the 19th century, the carrying of samurai swords was also banned, which is why the shirasaya sheath was used to camouflage the sword with the exterior of a stick or harmless wooden sword so that it could continue to be carried unnoticed.
