Schwemmer explores the following questions in his new book:
What is actually the "WAY" (the Dô, the Tao) in spiritual terms? - From this point of view, what do we have to imagine under Karate-dô?, the "way of Karate"? How are the great "WAY" and the concrete way of Karate-dô related to each other? Is it possible to teach and practice the one, the absolute WAY by means of Karate?
Schwemmer recognizes in Karate-dô a form of the absolute WAY. For him Karate is more than sport - or something else? In his reflections, he traces the roots of Karate-Dô, which lie in the art of war and in the tradition of Zen Buddhism.
"In the midst of life. Karate with Body and Soul" is first and foremost a reading book, which is intended to encourage the reader to rethink his own practice. Each chapter is self-contained and can be read on its own as a short essay on a particular topic.
The choice of topics is varied. Schwemmer directs the reader's view from different perspectives on a karate that is understood under spiritual aspects. Thereby he gives in this book impulses for the creation of a deeply understood karate way, for the realization of a karate-dô in the spiritual sense. In this way Schwemmer's new karate book is a guide for a concrete (spiritual) practice of the WAY.
Who understands Schwemmer correctly, recognizes: Karate-Dô is an expression of life. To live right is always to fight right. The fight is fought for the conscious and undivided experience of the present. The basic exercise for this is: To be present in the middle of life! Karate as an exercise of pure presence! Here, now, this.... Nothing else!
The book can be used like a reading book The topics are varied. It shows different aspects of Karate, gives impulses for Karate-dô and is guidance for the WAY. Accordingly, it is obvious to read individual texts, to reflect on them, to move them in the heart, to read them aloud if necessary, to read them repeatedly, to deal with them and let them become fruitful. The reader is invited to recognize himself in his inner process on the WAY, to be inspired and to practice in karate-dô.
