The hand-forged
John Lee Katsumoto Katana is made in the
Hon-Sanmei style - one of the most complex forging processes. The
tsuba is dedicated to
Hosokawa Katsumoto (* 1430; † 1473), an important governor of the Shogun and a key figure in the Onin War. For 10 years he fought with over 80,000 soldiers in the then capital Kyôto against his father-in-law Yamana Sôzen. Neither side could claim a victory for themselves.
The
blade has
3 different hardness ranges. The
cutting edge is made of hardened
1095 carbon steel, the
flanks are made of medium-hard
1065 carbon steel and the
core is made of softer, l
ow-carbon steel. The
hardening is differentiated to
approx. 60 ° Rockwell on the cutting edge and
approx. 40 ° Rockwell on the back of the blade. This difference in hardness is visible in a real, finely worked Hamon line. The center of gravity of the katana is about 14 cm above the tsuba.
