We have made a bokken in the Iwama-Ryu form from the sturdy and elastic ash wood. The Bokken is used in Aikido, especially in the dojos that train the Iwama-Ryu style. It is only slightly curved and slightly longer than a conventional bokken.
Ash is robust, abrasion resistant, load bearing and elastic. Ash is used in furniture and interior design, floorboards, stairs, veneers, sports equipment (e.g. toboggans), musical instruments and for tool handles.
The world tree Yggdrasil, which embodied the center of the universe, is an ash tree. Among the ancient Greeks, ash trees were considered fire-givers and curative medicine trees.
