Hanbo

Hanbo

The Hanbo weapon arose - rather coincidentally - from half of a Bo. Nagafusa Kuriyama smashed the Bo in an argument with a swordsman. He fought on with the leftover piece and thus defeated his opponent. In 1575 the Hanbo was included in the curriculum of the Kukishin Ryu. The Hanbo is mainly used in close combat (lever, push and punch techniques) and is used in several martial arts such as jujutsu, ninjutsu, karate or aikido.

The Tanbo is a short staff that was first used by farmers as a weapon. The tanbo was used as a substitute for weapons because the emperor had banned them from carrying weapons. It is used in many martial arts and is also used in pairs as a nitanbo.
