Japanese military sabres, known as gunto, were initially based on Western models from the end of the 19th century. From 1934, however, it was decided to revive the heritage of the katana through the design in order to reawaken the spirit of the samurai in the soldiers. The John Lee Gunto Katana belongs to the rank of captain in terms of its colour scheme. While ordinary soldiers carried industrially manufactured swords, high-ranking officers often had the blades of family heirlooms inserted into their military weapons. Unlike the katana, the sageo is not attached to the scabbard but to the end of the handle.
