In our fine Bokken-Store we offer you a Bokken made of high quality Japanese red oak in the Itto-Ryu-Form with Hi groove (Bo-Hi). The Bokken makes a soft whistling sound during the cut - similar to that of a katana. The bokken has a shoulder on the handle for a tsuba. The fibers of the wood run along the length, which reduces the risk of breakage.
The red oak wood used for Japanese bokken, also called "Akagashi", is very different from the red oak wood used for North American bokken. North American oak and Japanese oak are related, but Japanese oak is evergreen and therefore does not have a noticeable open grain like American white and red oak. The open grain of American oak results in soft areas that are more susceptible to impact damage. Akagashi, on the other hand, has a uniformly hard texture, excellent dent resistance, and better impact resistance than American Oaks. Nowadays, Akagashi is quite a rare and expensive wood even in Japan, and is mainly used for making high quality bokken.
