Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969) is considered one of the greatest martial arts masters. His work - Aikidō, the combination of his outstanding technical mastery with deep spiritual insight into the essence of the universe - is far more than just another of the many martial arts; it is, as he himself writes, “a god-inspired path to truth, goodness and beauty ».
Unfortunately, Morihei left little written evidence from his own hand, and from the time before World War II, when he was developing Aiki-Budō (later Aikidō), almost nothing has been published so far. The textbook Budō ("The Way of Fighting"), written in 1938, an introduction to the technique as well as the spirit and purpose of his art, was only now made available to the public. It contains one of the very few personal statements of the Aikidō founder on the basic principles, partly in the form of poems; Morihei personally stood in front of the camera for the photos.
In addition, there are some photo sequences from 1936, which were taken in a private dōjō, supplemented by pictures from 1951. A total of 441 photos give the reader the opportunity to gain a unique overview of Morihei's lifelong continuous devotion to the development of his art .
«Budo» is incomparable because it is the only book that shows aikido techniques with photos of the founder of aikido himself. Within the Iwama-Ryu it has almost Bible status. «Budo» has already given some readers deep insights and is undoubtedly the most important of all aikido books.
