This encyclopedia is the result of five decades of collecting and methodically reviewing the knowledge of the traditional martial arts, which have been practiced for many centuries in all the countries of the Far East. With the support of his wife Gabrielle, Roland Habersetzer has managed to bring together the quintessence of his research in the field of martial arts in the form of about 9400 main entries in this work of 1200 pages. The entries highlight technical, historical, philosophical, religious, cultural and biographical aspects of the martial arts from Japan, Okinawa, China, Korea, India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. In particular, fundamental concepts and outstanding personalities are presented with great detail and exemplary profundity. Roland Habersetzer, born in 1942, has been a practitioner of the martial arts since 1957. Already in 1961 he received the 1st Dan, becoming one of the first French "black belts" in karate. He is rightly considered a specialist in both Japanese martial arts (Budô) and Chinese (Wushu).
