Shoto & Wakizashi

The wakizashi is also known as shoto - a short sword with a slightly shorter blade between 30 cm and 60 cm. It was often used by the samurai as a pair of swords (Daishō) worn. In buildings the katana was put down and only the wakizashi (shoto) was worn in the belt (obi). Miyamoto Musashi - so the tradition - was that first samurai to use katana and wakizashi in combat. The founding of the martial art Niten Ichiryū is ascribed to him.
