Zaza is the Japanese word for bamboo. Due to its straight growth and its fresh, green color, it stands for growth and purity. In Japanese culture, it is also considered a symbol of luck.

John Lee Zaza Iaito addresses the bamboo not only through its ornamental rate (tsuba, fuchi, menuki, kashira), but also through small, golden bamboo leaves on the sheath.
